Home & EU Students Fee Status & Student Finance Support
If you are classed as a Home student, you may be eligible for lower Home tuition fees and maintenance funding through Student Finance UK. Below is a complete guide by FBA UK LTD to help you understand Home fee status eligibility and how tuition fee payments work.
Definition & Eligibility Criteria for a Home Student
You are likely to qualify for Home student fee status in the UK if you meet one of the following criteria:
- UK & Irish Nationals: British or Irish nationals who have resided in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, or Channel Islands for at least three full years prior to the first day of their course.
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR / ILE): Holders of Indefinite Leave to Remain, Indefinite Leave to Enter, or Right of Abode with three years of continuous residency in the UK or relevant territories. (Note: Specific criteria apply for those under the UK's EU Settlement Scheme).
- Refugee Status & Humanitarian Protection: Individuals granted refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK.
- Family Members of British Nationals: Spouses, civil partners, or children of British nationals who have lived in the UK for three full years before course commencement.
- British Overseas Territories: British nationals (or their spouses/children) residing in a British Overseas Territory for three full years prior to starting their degree.
- Long-Term Residency: Long-term legal residents who have lived in the UK for an extended period (typically half their life).
- Turkish Workers' Children: Children of Turkish workers who, along with their parent, have legally resided in the UK since before 31 December 2020.
Important Note: In most cases, you will not qualify for Home fee status if the primary purpose of your UK residence was receiving full-time education (e.g., attending a UK boarding school or university).
Exceptional Qualifying Circumstances
You may still qualify for Home status if:
- You resided outside the UK because you or your parent/spouse/guardian was temporarily employed abroad.
- You temporarily live outside the UK but maintain strong, ongoing connections and dual residency in the UK.
How to Pay Your UK Student Tuition Fees
Student Loans Company (SLC) - Tuition Fee Loan
If the Student Loans Company (SLC) is funding your tuition fees in full (via a tuition fee grant or loan), you do not need to arrange direct tuition payments to your university.
- Partial Funding: If Student Finance covers only a portion of your tuition, you are responsible for paying the remaining balance to the university.
- Notification & Registration: While the Student Loans Company usually notifies universities directly, occasionally system delays occur. In such cases, your university may ask for a copy of your Financial Notification letter.
Student Loans Company (SLC) - Maintenance Fund
Eligible Home students can also apply for a Maintenance Loan to assist with living costs (e.g., accommodation, books, and travel).
- The amount you receive is calculated based on your household income and where you live during the academic year.
- Release of Funds: Maintenance grants and loans are only released after you complete full university registration.
